Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus recently called for sustained international attention on the Rohingya crisis, cautioning that the entire region could face problems, not just Bangladesh, if ignored.

 

“We must pay attention,” he emphasized during a high-level discussion on the Rohingya situation at the UN General Assembly in New York.

 

At the event, speakers included Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain, High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi, ICC Prosecutor Karim AA Khan, IOM Director General Amy Pope, and others.

 

Yunus urged the international community to reevaluate its strategy regarding the Rohingya crisis and suggested that the UN Secretary-General convene a conference involving all stakeholders as soon as possible to assess the crisis and propose innovative solutions.

 

He also highlighted the need to reinvigorate the Joint Response Plan, a collaborative effort between the UN System and Bangladesh, due to the declining funding situation.

 

Furthermore, Yunus proposed that the international community robustly support justice and accountability measures for the genocidal crimes against the Rohingya.

 

He concluded by stating that addressing the injustices committed by Myanmar’s military junta is crucial for long-term peace and security.

 

The UNHCR chief expressed honor in participating in the discussion led by Yunus, noting that his presence brought a unique perspective to this annual UNGA event.

 

He stressed the importance of ending the discrimination and statelessness of the Rohingya people.
