The union representing thousands of striking Boeing workers has announced that a recent survey of its members shows a strong disinterest in Boeing’s latest pay offer. The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) stated on X that many members found the offer inadequate.

Earlier this week, Boeing proposed a new offer, which included a 30% pay rise over four years. Despite this, IAM reported that the survey results were overwhelmingly negative, with members expressing dissatisfaction with the offer.

On Monday, Boeing presented what it termed its “best and final” pay offer. This proposal included the reinstatement of a performance bonus, improved retirement benefits, and a doubled one-off signing bonus of $6,000 (£4,470). However, the offer was contingent on union members ratifying it by midnight Pacific Time on Friday, 27 September.

IAM criticized Boeing for sending the offer directly to union members and the media without informing union representatives. They also argued that the deadline did not allow sufficient time to organize a vote. Boeing, however, denied these claims and stated it would provide additional time and logistical support for the union to ballot its members.

The strike, which began on 13 September, involves over 30,000 Boeing workers who produce planes such as the 737 Max and 777. The workers initially rejected a 25% pay rise offer and have been on strike since, demanding better terms. IAM had initially sought a 40% pay rise for its members.

The ongoing strike poses a significant financial threat to Boeing, potentially costing the company billions of dollars. The company has already suspended the jobs of tens of thousands of staff as the strike continues.
